This
Autumn we are offering you the unique opportunity to
join Casterbridge Tours Chairman Michael Bromfield on
the trek
of a life-time through the remote Rolwaling Valley of
eastern Nepal to the highest peaks of the Himalaya.
The
Rolwaling is a verdant and beautiful valley inhabited
by a mixture of Tamangs and Sherpas, and which has not
been
'developed' by the ubiquitous teashop trekking of the
Khumbu and Everest region. Running
east-west for approximately 30 km, it is separated from
Tibet by a stretch of the Himalaya that includes
the beautiful Gauri Shankar (7134m), which for some
time was thought to be the highest peak in the world.
The first part of the trek travels through an idyllic rural landscape of
terraced fields, pretty Tamang villages and lush forests until we reach the
high Himalayan
pastures at the Sherpa village of Beding. A sensible acclimatisation programme
then follows before we move on to tackle the classic Tesi Lapcha Pass (5755m)
where an optional ascent can be made of the classic trekking peak
Parchemo which is 6187 metres in height - a supplement is payable
for this.
The glaciated Tesi Lapcha provides a spectacular approach route to the Khumbu
valley
and brings us out at the village of Thame.
Thame village was the birth place
of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who with Sir Edmund Hillary first climbed Everest
in 1953. The village still produces many of the strongest climbing Sherpas
including Apa Sherpa who has climbed Everest 19 times. Thame is also home
to one of the most important Buddhist Monasteries in Nepal.
From Thame, we next head north for a day, following the quiet valley which
forms the old trading route to Tibet. We exit this via the Renjo
La (5390m),
a
rarely-crossed pass which gives stunning views of Everest and direct access
to the turquoise lakes at Gokyo. We can climb the peak of Gokyo Ri (5100m)
for an unsurpassed view of glaciers, lakes and four of the World's highest
peaks - Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu.
Beyond this, Cho Oyu beckons
and our trek culminates with a spectacular trek
towards the former South Face base camp of the world's sixth highest peak,
and en route we will see the most expansive and rarely seen views
of Everest.
The
price for the trek is £2240 which is based
on land only arrangements joining in Kathmandu. For
